Tips & Tricks

Master the art of word searching. Learn strategies to find more words, especially the valuable 6+ letter words!

🟢 Beginner Tips

Start with Vowels

Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) are anchors in word structure. Find a vowel, then look for consonants around it. Most words contain vowels, so they're great starting points for longer words.

Scan Row by Row

Start at the top-left and systematically move right, then down. This ensures you don't miss obvious horizontal words. Fast and simple for beginners.

Look for Obvious Words

Common words like "TREE", "GAME", "PLAY", "WORD" are often in the puzzles. Look for words you use every day first.

Green Cells = Already Found

Green highlighted cells show letters that are part of words you've already found. Skip these when starting new words (though you can use them as part of longer words).

🔍 Common Prefixes to Look For

Prefixes are letter combinations at the start of words. Learning these helps you spot longer words quickly.

RE- (again/back)

Examples: RETURN, RECENT, REMOVE

UN- (not)

Examples: UNKIND, UNAWARE, UNLIKE

PRE- (before)

Examples: PREPARE, PRESENT, PREVENT

DIS- (not/opposite)

Examples: DISPLAY, DISEASE, DISLIKE

IN- (not/in)

Examples: INPUT, INSIDE, INFORM

DE- (remove)

Examples: DEFINE, DETAIL, DEGREE

🎯 Common Suffixes to Look For

Suffixes are letter combinations at the end of words. They're gold for finding longer words!

-ING (action)

Examples: PLAYING, RUNNING, EATING

-ER (one who)

Examples: PLAYER, RUNNER, TEACHER

-LY (how/manner)

Examples: QUICKLY, SLOWLY, HAPPILY

-TION (result/action)

Examples: ACTION, NATION, MOTION

-NESS (quality)

Examples: SADNESS, KINDNESS, MADNESS

-ED (past tense)

Examples: PLAYED, WALKED, JUMPED

⭐ Advanced Scanning Methods

The Diagonal Scan

Most players miss diagonals! Long words often hide in diagonal lines. Scan from top-left going down-right, and from top-right going down-left.

Pro tip: A 6+ letter word is worth 100 points. Spending 30 seconds on diagonal scanning can be very profitable!

Reversed Words

Words can run backward (right to left, bottom to top, or diagonal reverse). If you see "GNIRTS" backward, it's "STRING" forward!

Hint: Look at common word endings and try reading them backward as beginnings.

Letter Clustering

Find clusters of consonants or vowels. "TION", "OUGH", "IGHT" are letter clusters that consistently form words.

When you spot "TION", look for words ending with it: ACTION, NATION, MOTION, etc.

Double Letters

Double letters (like "LL", "EE", "SS") are clues! Words like "LETTER", "COFFEE", "HAPPY" all have double letters. Find the double, then expand around it.

E is the most common letter, so "EE" is a strong signal for common words.

⚡ Speed Solving Tactics

The 4-Word Strategy

Every puzzle contains 4-letter words that are very common. Find 4-5 of these quickly, then focus on extending them to 5-6 letters.

4-letter combos: TREE, GAME, PLAY, WORD, HAND, TIME, MAKE, TAKE, GIVE, LOVE

Build Upward

Found a 4-letter word? Look for ways to add one letter before or after it to make a 5-letter word. "PLAY" → "PLAYS", "PLAY" → "PLAYING" (wait, that's adding 4 letters!).

This exploits the fact that words share letter sequences.

Secondary Scan

After your first pass finding easy words, your brain has "warmed up" with letter patterns. Do a second scan focusing on harder, longer words.

Many players find their best words on the second pass!

💡 Mental Shortcuts

  • The "STER" combo: MONSTER, SISTER, MASTER, FASTER all end in STER. If you see these letters adjacent, you've found a common suffix.
  • Vowel patterns: AEIOU, EAI, OUE are common vowel sequences. Words usually have vowels spread out (not AEIO in a row).
  • Q almost always has U: If you spot Q, look for U nearby. QU starting a word? QUALITY, QUESTION, QUICK.
  • X and Z are hard: These appear less often. When they do, they're usually in specific words: BOXING, ZONE, DOZEN, PRIZE.
  • Common 6-letter words: PEOPLE, LETTER, SYSTEM, NATURE, CHANGE. If you see any of these letter combinations, hunt for them!
